Why keep a blog about my barely informed forays into home bartending? I went Web 2.0 with this project after I accepted a pro gig as co-editor and writer for LAist. SLOSHED! began shortly thereafter in May 2005 when I discovered the therapeutic qualities of cocktails: mixing, shaking, experimenting with flavors and textures, the strange and quirky nature of the discipline and its history. Oh, and drinking them. Much like cooking (an equally beloved pastime), mixing drinks is fun. It’s relaxing and enlightening. Most importantly, it’s a craft and it takes practice, hence the birth of the blog. I’m sharing my minor obsession and major hobby: the pursuit of the perfect bar. Who am I? My name is Marleigh. Born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, I’ve called the city home for nearly a decade despite longing for lower rent and more reliable public transit. A graphic designer by day, I share an apartment with my partner (known on the blog as The Boyfriend) and our feline familiar, O’Malley. Besides cocktails, I like reading, music, board games, argyle, hunting for vintage vinyl and riding my bike.

Whiskey & Ginger Muddle

I splurged on some early apricots two weeks ago but my enthusiasm wasn’t rewarded; they were still a little too firm and bitter, so I had to turn to the old faithful dried apricots to get my spring stone fruit fix.

La Floridita Daiquiri

There is one very important thing to remember when making a daiquiri: it doesn’t have to be frozen. And it probably shouldn’t be.
