A Drink for Saint Valentine

February 13th, 2011  |  Published in seasonal

Of all the saints in the canon, it’s hard to get worked up about Saint Valentine. Historians aren’t even sure who exactly he was, given that there are 14 saints named Valentinus who lived at roughly the same time. Pretty much all we can be sure of is that he was alive during the latter part of the fifth century and that February 14 is his feast day. So every year we have a holiday in ol’ Valentine’s honor, professing him to be the patron of lovers (in the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed that birds began pairing off on his feast day), and every year on February 14 the world is suffused with pink and red as far as the eye can see. Though I don’t care much for the commercial, “buy me a diamond or I won’t love you” type of Valentine nonsense, I can’t really knock the idea of a day dedicated to love and romance. Who couldn’t use more of both in their life?

So to celebrate the thoughtful, sweet, romantical side of the holiday, I’ve compiled a list of some favorite drinks from the archives that are perfect for showing some love to someone you love. There’s a little something for everyone, so make with the shaking for your special someone.
