Rum Runner (1986)

I’m sorry if this post seems a little phoned-in, but I am at home with my very sick cat. He took ill suddenly last night and it’s been a long day of the vet’s office and making space for a crate and administering medication…you get the idea.

This drink happened the other night while my best friend was by for a visit. Originally the idea was to go see Elizabeth: The Golden Age but our plans were sabotaged by overtime. When I arrived home, she and the boyfriend had already burned through most of the rum drinks in their repertoire and I was commissioned to find something new. I obliged by turning to Schumann’s Tropical Drink Book and his interpretation of the cocktail named for illegal hooch smuggling—which, I might add, is a legacy I much prefer over NASCAR.

Rum Runner (1986)

juice of ½ lime
¼ oz simple syrup
2¾ oz pineapple juice
1 oz brown rum
1 oz white rum
a few splashes Angostura bitters

Shake over ice and strain into an ice-filled highball glass. Garnish with an orange slice and maraschino cherry.

This tastes very much like what most people try to pass off as a Mai Tai in most bars—heavy on the juice (nothing wrong with that, necessarily), sweet, without a strong alcohol bite. It’s not exceptionally sweet, as many of the pretend Mai Tais are, but it does balance the sweet with the tartness of the juices well. It was a very enjoyable, relaxing drink to have in the company of friends. Too bad it wouldn’t work to help relax a sick, distressed kitty…

I think there are quite a lot of recipes out there. This what I know is completely different. I took it from Bum Berries Grog Log and it calls for Creme de Banane, Creme de Mure and the overproof Wray & Nephews rum (plus lime, pineapple juice, grenadine). And it is even served frozen…

Your recipe sounds even more appealing, as it is easy and straight forward - with my approach I would like to substitute the combination of white and dark rum with a nice amber colored and aged rum…and it why not use demerara syrup (or jagery syrup) instead of simple syrup?

    Thanks for this nice post!

    Cheers!

Oh no, how’s O’Malley? I hope better. He didn’t get into the booze or anything did he?

He’s doing five hundred times better, thanks. He did not (fortunately) get into the booze. He had some urinary tract issues, but the meds and special food have worked magic and restored him to the cranky prima donna we know and love!

Glad to hear your cat didn’t get into the hooch! And yeah, I much prefer the moonshiners to the guys making left turns all day. :)

he was referring to the fact that NASCAR racing came about because the moonshiners were continually trying to improve thier cars, and eventually started racing each other, which eventually turned into NASCAR.
