Paloma Mi Amante

Back in June, Paul over at Cocktail Chronicles posted about an experimental infusion called Tequila por Mi Amante, which is a simple combination of strawberries and tequila. Chop a pint of (organic) berries, cover with tequila, let steep for a minimum of three weeks and ta da! You are now the proud parent of a gorgeous, deep red, peppery-sweet jar of reposado tequila.

As you may have guessed by now, on Paul’s recommendation I put my own jar of strawberries and tequila together to sit for a month. After an agonizing wait, I recently cracked the jar to mix up his recommended cocktail, Paloma Mi Amante.

2 oz Tequila Mi Amante
juice of ½ a lime
pinch coarse saltAdd ingredients to an ice-filled Collins glass; top with grapefruit soda (I use Trader Joe’s Italian Style Grapefruit Soda).
This drink is just…wow. Wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Tart, sweet, peppery, tangy, ice cold—the Paloma was already a favorite of mine during these grueling summer months, but the Paloma Mi Amante takes it up a notch. It amplifies the beautiful balance of the drink with a new layer of complexity that makes this combination sing. I could, very easily, drink a pitcher of these by myself and if no one stops me I probably will.

Sounds like it’d hit the spot right about now. I could use a really, really, really good cocktail, and an infused one–yeah, sign me up!

ooooooooooooooh. I’m making this face :O
That sounds perfect. But I must wait three weeks you say? Oi. My patience is tried on so many levels–wait for the vanilla to infuse the vodka, wait for the tomatoes to sun dry, wait for the sourdough to sour. Might just need to go out for an immediate-gratification cocktail on my way to get strawberries…

Three weeks is a must! You have to wait for the tequila to draw out the color and sweetness of the berries. I actually made it four by shoving it to the very, very back of my fridge (behind the miso) so that I wouldn’t see it all the time and want to try it right away.
Did you get yourself an immediate gratification cocktail? I broke down over the weekend and made a milkshake, even though it wasn’t cookie-dough-peanut-butter-chocolate…
