Today’s drink comes courtesy of Kaiser Penguin. I found this recipe a few weeks ago and kept telling myself to remember to make it. Naturally, this was around the same time that Intoxica! arrived, so the Orange Viola and its orange-y wonders were waylaid by the magic of tiki fever.
Now I have finally managed to remember this on a day hot enough to warrant sitting outside, doing absolutely nothing but enjoying a temperature below 85 degrees with an icy beverage in hand.
1 1/2 oz gin
3/4 oz Campari
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
dash orange bitters
orange twistShake with ice and strain into a chilled glass, with or without ice. Garnish with orange twist.
I’m not sure if it is easy to tell from my terrible photography, but the color of this drink is stunning. Really, really beautiful—a bright, rich red-orange that looks ready to leap out of the glass and smother you with biting orange flavor. It made me think of hibiscus flowers and tropical sunsets which, in my present state of near heat exhaustion, is not a bad thing.
The only comment I have is that if you don’t like Campari, you shouldn’t waste your time. This tastes like Campari and a lot of it, so caveat emptor.
