Corpse Reviver #2

This entry goes out to one particular reader. You know you who are. And you were definitely right about this one.

This was the drink that sold me on the continuing relevance of classic cocktails. Sure, I’ll drink flavored vodka or a modern ‘tini concoction. I’m pretty equal opportunity; I’ll try anything once. I even tried a Cosmo, not that I’d ever do so again.

Given the choice, however, I’ll choose gin or scotch every time. With that in mind, plus my personal bent toward the morbid, the Corpse Reviver #2 is my perfect match.

1 oz gin
1 oz Cointreau
1 oz Lillet Blanc
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1 drop pastis

Shake ingredients together in an iced shaker. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a stemless cherry.

Yow, is this good. One sip was sufficient to convince me that this is exactly what cocktails should be about—smooth, strong, flavorful, provacative. You’ll definitely remember this once you’ve tried it.

Caveat: I cannot stress the importance of fresh lemon juice enough. Make this fresh or don’t make it at all. It will only disappoint if you don’t.
