Blue Monday

Okay, I admit it. The real reason that the Blue Monday appealed to me was the New Order song. I assume that is where the name comes from and, as such, it seemed like the perfect late afternoon, lazing-while-listening-to-the-stereo drink for my roommate.

That aside, it sounded like a relatively straight-forward cocktail, mixing gin with citrus flavors and some club soda. The real gimmick of this one is the blue tinge that results from the curacao, though it doesn’t do much besides make it eye-catching.

1 oz gin
1 oz Cointreau
dash blue curacao
club soda

Add gin and Cointreau to highball glass filled with ice. Fill glass with club soda, stir, add blue curacao, stir again, and serve.

Overall, the drink is enjoyable. The presentation is nice (though I think it needs a garnish), the consistency is light and slightly effervescent, and the flavor is smooth and inoffensive (could benefit from a little twist of juice…from a garnish). I added an extra dash of blue curacao, as one dash resulted in a milky, vaguely blue tint.
