September Morn

November 15th, 2005  |  Published in rum

Lately I’ve been experimenting with drinks that use egg whites, with varying degrees of success. I need more practice to learn how to get a successfully frothy head when shaking, but I think I’m getting better.

Tonight, the drink was a September Morn, a red rum-based concoction with a layer of nice white foam on top. As a rule, I’m not a big rum fan. I’ve had some success with the average Rum & Coke or Dr Rumber, but I’ve never gone out of my way to learn to appreciate rum since I wasn’t much on it to begin with. Since my first experience with the Mojito, I’ve begun to reevaluate my feelings, so I’ve been branching out.

2 oz white rum
1 oz lemon juice
1 egg white
splash of grenadine

Shake ingredients for 30 seconds; strain into a cocktail glass and serve.

After mixing vigorously and straining into a pre-chilled cocktail glass, my attempt resulted in a pink—rose, really—drink with a rather meager—though lovely white—layer of foam on top. I was vaguely disappointed with its appearance, but continued onward. The taste is something like extremely tart lemonade with an alcoholic aftertaste—not quite the expected result, I’m sure.

In the end, I think my “splash” of grenadine was more a “dash,” which drastically reduced the cherry-lemonade flavor (and color) evident toward the bottom of the glass. Next time, more grenadine!
